Over 6,000 runners will kick off Scotland Week on Sunday, March 30, 2008 during the fifth-annual Scotland Run 10K through Central Park. As part of Scotland Week, the Scotland Run is designed to honor Scottish heritage and celebrate Scotland's vibrant living culture.Sponsored by the Scottish Government and operated by the New York Road Runners (NYRR), the Scotland Run attracts runners and families from across the globe — many outfitted in kilts and face paint — as they run to the beat of bagpipes and drums through a 6.2-mile loop in Central Park. The run starts at 10:00 a.m. on March 30, 2008 at West Drive and 62nd Street in Central Park, and ends at Tavern on the Green. Following the race there will be a special live music performance by Scotland’s own, Red Hot Chilli Pipers. Interviews will be available with runners, The Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Linda Fabiani, Scotland's Minister for Europe, External Affairs & Culture and Mary Wittenburg, President and CEO of New York Road Runners. The Scotland Run, a qualifying run for the ING New York City Marathon, is one of more than 55 races NYRR organizes throughout the year. The NYRR races and fitness programs draw more than 300,000 runners annually.
